What happened to the image mapping in 3D? You used to be able to select where the image would go. Now, it's a mess. Is this because of the other new 3D options Adobe offers for an additional subscription?

The option works differently in the newer 3D effect, but it still should be possible to place a symbol wherever you like. What is preventing you?

Without the option to choose where you want the graphic, as you used to be able to do, now it seems random and the wrapping is weirdly distorted. A plain cylinder seems okay, but any other shape, like a bowl, doesn't do so well.

There are differences in the way the new 3D mapping works, including limitations in wrapping completely around objects, but I still don't understand why you can't choose where you want the graphic. You simply drag it around the object.
Can you show screenshots of what's not working?

You can still use the "Classic" 3D effects.
In 3D & materials you can also move your label around, but still you might not be able to achive what you want.

Do I understand right that you mean location of decal on OBJ (or other exported) after importing it in other 3D App? Can you provide a sceenshot?

Hello @imwondrin,
Thanks for reaching out. I hope the suggestions shared by Doug, Monika, and Ares helped resolve the trouble you were having with 3D in Illustrator. If not, kindly share a screen recording of the problem, a sample file, and the exact version of the OS / Illustrator installed on your computer so we can investigate this further.
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks,
Anubhav
