increase in file size

I have a illustrator file with a few layers. One of the layers contains a linked image with a size of 96 MB.

When i save the illustrator file the total size increases to 406 MB! 

The problem must be in the linked file because when i strip the layer with the linked image and then save the file, it is only 2 MB.

Does someone know why this is happening and what can be done to prevent this?

Have you tried saving with PDF Compatibility turned off? Sounds like there is an uncompressed version of the JPG saved in the file.
