I am an experienced illustrator user, and rely on pathfinder daily. All of a sudden, the pallet won't show up, even though the window>Pathfinder is checked as visible, and trying to access if through the menus returns the same worthless message "pathfinder effects should usually be applied to groups, layers, or type objects, This may not have any effect on the current selection."
Tried saving, closing and restarting the system, same problem reoccurs... Seething here!
Hi Pixxel - that appears to work! Thanks! D

Please show screenshot with selected path items, visible layers palette (selected items visible) and what icon in pathfinder palette do you use.
(also note: menu Pathfinder effects are NOT the same as the functions in Pathfinder palette)
If the palette not shows, try to reset your workspace:
menu: Window --> Workspace --> reset [Your Workspace]
or change to another one and later back

Hi Pixel - the pathfinder pallet is the problem - I can't get it to appear. it is checked in the window>pathfinder but does not appear on any of the work surfaces or stacked with the other pallets. Working on trying to save current prefs so I can do a reset. Thanks, D

Hi David,
Sorry about this error. Along with questions asked above is it happening with a particular file or with the new files as well?
Does resetting Illustrator Preferences(https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help resolve the issue? Please take a backup of the same before resetting them.
Regards,
Srishti

Where is there a control panel in Illustrator?

OK so now I see what they mean by control panel- but how do you give a name to current set of preferences? I click non the preferences dot on the bar at the top, but there does not seem to be a way to name or save?

Please try at first to change your workspace (see my post #1) and change back.
What happens?
