Links on control bar

Is there a way to put a short cut icon to update links / relink on the control (toolbar) panel?

I tried recording an action but it didn't get further than the links panel, so I assume the pulldown options menu is unavailable for actions.

Are you trying to make the Links panel show up? You can set your workspace to include it:

Workspace basics

You can also access a linked file via the Control bar or the Properties panel, however the panels are both contextual--so the image would need to be selected. You can add a selection through the Select menu as a step in an action.

Thanks Myra, but I wanted a one stop contextual button on the control panel for update and relink.

I'm sure it's scriptable, I just thought there maybe a hack or third party plug-in.

At least to the Update Link command you can assign a custom keyboard shortcut.

See Edit menu > Keyboard Shortcuts > Menu Commands > Other Panel section.
