Do you need to do this with Live Paint?

You can select objects with the Selection or Direct Selection tools and use the Color or Swatches Panel to change the color.

Does the DXF artwork contain closed paths? Very often DXF or DWG files I receive are saved from applications like AutoCAD. The files contain artwork that consists of many open path line segments that cannot be filled. In order to create a version of the artwork that has color fills the artwork often must be re-created with closed paths using the original artwork as a guide.
