I am using Illustrator version 25.4.1 and the command "Make Guide" does not work when I simply want to make a vert/hort line and specify the location.
The only time I can get it to work is by selecting and object and then selecting it from the menu. When I do that the fill goes bland and the stroke blue, which I take to mean the object has become the guide. The same thing happens if it is one object or many.
I have looked at the other posts in the forum, but they haven't given me any insight to my problem.
That is the way it works.
You can drag guides from the rulers or create them from selected paths.

What exactly do you have selected, when this does not work? You need to have a vector path selected for me guide to work.
Use the line tool to draw a line, or the pen tool, select the vector path and make guide.

Thank you very much for your replies.
The problem here is with me not understanding that guides are not placed exactly like you can in Photoshop. Not quite sure how I missed that.
I have discovered that you can place a guide specifically at 350pts (for example) by changing the X or Y value of the guide in the Control Window when the guide is selected.
Thanks for your help in getting me to understand this.
