Merging multiple closed paths onto one layer

So im looking to merge multiple <path> shapes onto a singular layer to then create a clipping mask, whenever i select the group that im trying to combine, my Merge Layers option in the layers drop bar is greyed out. I've done quite a bit of research before coming here but havent found an answer yet. Most of what comes up utilizes the Shape Builder tool which i cant use in this case as the shapes arent overlapping. I have also tried my Pathways window to try and Merge but i believe the same concept applies to Pathway commands as it does the Shape Builder tool when trying to merge separate shapes. Im presuming that a simple answer is right in front of me and that i just cant see it right now, help will be much appreciated.

To create a clipping mask out of multiple paths, you have to make a compound path out of them.
