It is recommended to always make a backup before updating the computer.
It's probably impossible to get back your work after a system update went wrong.
Did you perhaps save your work to Adobe Cloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or the like?

That doesn't happen normally. Are you sure that the files are deleted? Did you check the folders or are depending upon things like recent files to identify that the file is deleted?
