Greetings,

I drew this heart to dot the "i" in Happiness, colored it in, scanned it, then copied and pasted it into the logo I created in Adobe Illustrator.  I AM not a graphic designer and I accomplished this feat one youtube tutorial at a time. 🙂

Today, using more youtube tutorials, I figured out how to select and color each different word of my logo, but the heart will not color.  I tried Rasterizing it, but I couldn't find a tute to tell me how to color it once I rasterized it, and consequently, I cannot figure out how to color it the same yellow as the rest of the word Happiness.  And since it was included in the selection when I selected Happiness using the Selection Tool, I cannot figure out why it did not color when the rest of the word did.

I also have the heart as a separate file but cannot figure out how to change the color of it separately.

Please advise in the simplest terms possible:  why is the object not coloring and how do I change the color?  Also, please tell me what those two little red boxes with the crosses in them mean -- there's one at the top of the "n" in Happiness, and one at the top of the "S" in Success, but there is not one in the word "Love".

I've attached a png I exported and a screenshot of the image on the Illustrator drawing board.  I'M using Adobe in Creative Cloud on a Windows 10 OS.

Thanks,

Antoinette

When you scanned the heart, the result was a raster image, so "rasterizing" it had no effect, and it wouldn't have helped in any case. Illustrator is a vector graphics editor. You can place or paste raster images, but Illustrator offers no means to edit them.

The text you set in Illustrator is live type, which is effectively of vector contruct, so you are able to change its fill color, as you've discovered. To get a heart shape you can edit in Illustrator, you'd have to draw it in Illustrator using the native vector creation tools. Other alternatives would be to seek out a heart-shape vector graphic, or "trace" your scanned one.

The red + boxes on your text are overset alerts. That probably means you set the type as Illustrator "Area" type (which is text entered into a text frame - the overset alert means there is more text there [unseen] than fits in the frame). You could select it and choose "Convert to Point Type" from the Type menu. That would free it from its frame and negate the overset.
