New Image trace in 29.0

New Here ,
Dec 11, 2024 Dec 11, 2024

Not sure if this is the right place to put new thoughts on the update but I'll include one critique I have.

I am not enjoying the new Image Trace. I have an image of B&W half tone dots and have spent hours fiddling with the new Image Trace settings trying to get the circles to be expanded into vectors.

However, whenever I Image Trace, the circles lose their perfect shape and morph into oblongs. I was confused as to why this was happening, as previously I had done it with zero difficulty. After hours of playing with the paths, corners, noise, and all the other Image Trace settings, I had finally re-downloaded v28.

Lo and behold, easy Image Trace, with my circles remaining circles, not oblongs.

If I am missing something, please advise, otherwise I much prefer v28's Image Trace function.

@kevinw751852

I've branched your post to a new thread where it will be better seen.

Screenshots of before, after, and your settings will help.

Hi @jane-e,

Thanks for your response, and apologies for the tone of my initial post.

The attached are screenshots of the same file before and after Image Trace, one of v28 and the other v29, with identical settings. I have not posted much on these forums, so hopefully the file name is visible to be able to differentiate the images.

Other possibly important things to note are these are files imported from Photoshop using the Color Halftone filter. They are also quite large, which you may have noticed. The total image size is 20" x 60" as I am using these vectors to send to a vinyl cutting machine.

I appreciate your help very much, and thanks again,

Kevin

Kevin, I agree there is a big difference in tracing between 2024 and 2025.

Can you report that at UserVoice?

@kevinw751852  There already is a post at UserVoice similar to yours:

I added some examples, both using the tracing defaults:
