no response when selecting any save option

i finished a component of a project and went to save the file but got no response, also tried using the save as, save a copy, and export options but none brought up any response, other options in the panel work (document setup etc) and everything else on illustrator is working just none of the save options!! i cant close illustrator or ill loose a couple hours of work, not the first time this has happened either.

Have tried copying the elements to a new document but same thing, any help would be greatly appreciated cheers!

You could try pressing ESC in case there's a dialog open. If that's the case, then it would need to be closed before doing anything else.
