Not letting me draw along path lines

It's a bit hard to explain, when I draw using the pen tool it used to let me draw in perfectly straight lines or draw along a path. Now it's not happening. Is this a bug or is it toggleable? any help is appreciated, thanks

Are you referring to Smart Guides that can be turned on in the View menu?

Or are you perhaps accidentally using the Curvature tool instead of the Pen tool?
