Numerous issues when saving AI to SVG

Hi everyone!

If anyone has any insight or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

My current "fix" was dowloading and using an older version of Adobe Illustrator, but a small error still arose with that.

There was a change of the SVG code with no option to choose the former SVG code (which we need for our eProduct). Also other issues appeared when saving AI to SVG. See below:

    1. Clipping paths are handled differently (see screenshot "Example-Code)
    2. File format of the linked background images changed from JPG to PNG
    3. File size from the linked background images increased significantly (won’t load when opening the SVG)

4. Background image shifted, so things aren't properly lined up anymore (see screenshot "Example-ImageShift")

Hi @YvetteK,

Thank you for sharing the details of the issues you’re facing. To better understand and assist you with the problems when saving AI files to SVG, could you please provide the following?

1. The original AI file you’re working with.

2. A screenshot of the export settings you used when saving as SVG.

3. The exported SVG file.
4. The version of Adobe Illustrator you are currently using.

With this information, I’ll be able to investigate the issue further and provide tailored recommendations or solutions. Looking forward to helping you resolve this!

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

Hi Anshul,

Thank you so much for getting back to me.

Since my job doesn't allow us to share things via public apps, they created a link where you can download the items.

There are 2 folders. One with the ai file and svg created at the time was the newer version of Illustrator (July 2024) that created issues when saving as an svg. The 2nd folder is with the ai and svg files saved in an older version of Illustrator (27.9.4). I attached a screenshot of the SVG export settings.

Thanks for sharing the details and files via DM, @YvetteK. I’ve shared them with the product team, and here’s what they’ve shared so far:

  1. Regarding your AI file: We will need to investigate this further and get back to you.
  2. SVG code format choice: The team is working on providing a UI option to choose the SVG code format.
  3. Large file sizes and rasterization issues: We are currently addressing this with the new UI, which will allow us to specify the rasterization format and resolution. In the meantime, you can try the following steps to avoid large file sizes:
    • Go to Asset Export.
    • Under Format Settings, select the JPG 80 tab.
    • Disable the “Embed ICC Profile” option. This should help with the file size issue. For PNGs, this should not apply.
  4. Background image shifting: This is likely caused by the Decimal Places setting in the SVG Options dialog. Try setting it to a value greater than 2. We’ve also discovered an older issue with the ALT+S keyboard shortcut, causing issues with decimal places. If you encounter this, use File > Save As for now, and we’re working on a fix.

Let me know if this helps or if you need further assistance. We’re here to help you through this!

Best,

Anshul Saini
