objects in artboard cannot be selected.

After exporting jpg and png, then saving .ai file, when I re-opened it, I cannot select objects in the artboard. I need to add one more subject to my file, but it is as if all the objects on the layer were flattened.  The layer is not locked. Grateful for suggestions.

Would you mind sharing more details, like the exact version of the OS/Illustrator, details of your workflow, including the exact steps taken to replicate the problem, including a screen recording (https://adobe.ly/3X1VXWp), so we can investigate this further?
