Do you have an italic version of the fonts you to use installed on your machine? If you do, select the type you want to change, then in the Character panel just click and hold on the font name box and choose the Italic version.

Yeah I see that.
Turns out that the font I was using doesn't have italics. I would have thought that 99% of them have italics.

In that case you might try selecting the text and try using the Skew tool. Opt(Alt)-click with the tool on the type anchor and in the dialog use something like 12 degrees. Should do the job.
