Louise
Hello @Have a Louk,
Sorry to hear about this experience. On restarting Illustrator, the app auto-recovery process gets initiated and opens up all the unsaved files with the Recovered suffix. If that did not happen, the file could not be recovered. I would request you save multiple copies of your active project to avoid such a scenario in the future.
You may learn more about how Illustrator's recovery works here: https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/recover-files-after-crash.html.

Data recovery is not a backup, it is only used to recover files when your computer or Illustrator unexpectedly crashes.
It does not help you right now, but you have a CC account, so you can sync your files by saving them in your CC files folder.
They automatically get versioned (you can go back to previous file versions for at least 10 days ago).
And still make traditonal backups as well...
