overlapping pattern brushes

Does anyone know how to make this pattern brush using this shape:

 so then you get a brush that will do this?  I have tried everything with clipping masks, etc....  Thank you for your help!

If this needs to work on closed paths, you will need shapes like these:

Plus an invisible (no fill no stroke) rectangle in the background that marks the repeat. Drag it into the brushes panel and make the pattern brush.

Try a Pattern brush with an invisible rectangle in the back that is smaller on the left side than your arrow.
