Pathfinder error when merging shapes

Hi all, was wondering if you could help me with this frustrating error I keep getting.

When using the pathfinder tool to try and merge shapes on Illustrator, I keep getting this result which looks like it is doubling the stroke for certain areas of the combined shape (see before and after screengrabs attached).

Both shapes have a transparent fill applied.

Anyone know what could be causing this? I've been through loads of forums and support sites but have found nothing so far.

Many thanks,

Sam

Sam (and maga), Maybe too silly, but is the Stroke aligned to Inside for the original (rectangular) paths? Edit: it seems to be that, just tried it out.

Sam, maga,

What happens if you hold Ctrl/Cmd and press E?

It toggles between GPU and CPU preview, GPU sometimes moves in mysterious ways.

The bottom line is thicker than the side lines which are aligned with the inner edge of the original line.

And what happens if you use Divide?

Apologies - I am trying to use Divide - my original post wasn't clear!
Unfortunately the same result when on both GPU and CPU preview.

Any ideas what ese it could be?

You are welcome, Sam, and thank you for your kind words.

I had to leave right after posting and just came back; and saw that you found the stroke alignment.

helo Jacob, I have a problem with the shape display in illustrator. The fill doesn't stick to the outline.

When I divide the objects then some changes in shapes appear (the stroke becomes rough).

Do you have any idea?

maga,

I believe it is the the GPU, have you tried to hold Ctrl/Cmd and press E?

You are at 64000% but it ought to look nice (at least with CPU preview).

Whenever that strange kind of irregularity is shown, GPU is the first guess by whichever helper sees it first; and it occurs quite often here in our friendly and helpful forum.

Jacob, I'm attaching a screenshot on which you can see what happens when I turn on CPU preview

Something wrong is going on with The CPU

Do you have any idea how to fix it?

maga,

For some (or no good) reason I have only just seen your latest post from February.

Is (or was) View>Pixel Preview on?
