pathfinder help??

I don't know exactly how to explain this so please have patience. I have this type and want the line on the bottom to go through it but seperated from the word. here is the screen shot and thank you in advance

You could do this non-destructively.

 

If you want to really cut:

The text needs to be outlined (Type > Outline Text)

Apply Offset Path (Object > Path > ...) to the line. The function will make a copy of the path.

The outlined text might be a group, then the pathfinder will produce unexpected results, so ungroup it.

Then select the g and the fat line and use the button subtract in the pathfinder pnel.
