PDF onverts design into shapes

I used rectangle shapes and the warp tool to create a smoke design but when I save it as a PDF it converts the smoke back into rectangle shapes. This doesn't happen when I export it as a jpg. I've experimented with some of the PDF presets.

Can you share an example PDF (with Illustrator edting capabilities on)?

It open correct in Acrobat (although I see briefly flashing the blocks).

I'll check Illustrator later.
