pen and brush tool are creating jagged lines

for some reason all of a sudden whenever I create something with the pen or brush tools, the lines are jagged, usually they are automatically smooth. I have checked all the settings and nothing has changed there. the motif was done with image trace and I tried using the smooth tool to fix the rough edges on that but it didn't work. i've been trying to trace over the motif with the brush and/or pen tool and the edges are as horrible as the image trace. i understand how the tools and smooth works, but i can't understand why, all of a sudden, it's creating sh!t lines. so frustrating. thanks any help welcome

Do you have anti-aliased artwork checked in the Preferences?
