Photo in Fill & Stroke

Somehow I copy and pasted an image and combined it with a black square by dragging it over.  The photo acts like a normal color, and expands when I add stroke.  Note: This is not a clipping mask, but it kind of acts like one.  Is this a glitch or a new feature I just didn't know about?

If you drag a picture to the Swatches panel, it becomes a pattern fill.
