Placed Files And File Sizes

If I place a file, it is linked to the original correct?
Does it save a complete copy inside the file I am working on?

It seems like if I place 6 linked files into one, the size of that one file will be the sum of those 6 files.
So there is really no benefit of breaking up things into separate files.

If you place a file, it depends on the options you check when placing. You need to turn on "Linked" checkbox. And again when saving the AI file, don't embed the linked images (that is an option again)

Still the linked files will be embedded into the PDF that gets embedded into the AI file when save with "PDF compatibility"
