  • Hey I need some help please. Im creating an a3 print poster and billboard in illustrator but im having trouble placing a PSD file without it becoming pixalated. I cant make it PNG because it has to be CMYK and the PDF variation still is slightly pixelated. Does anyone have any advice on how I can work around this or how I can make sure the PSD link doesn't pixalate in illustrator please? Or is there a work around that i can do please and thank you soooo much in advance for the help  🙂

What size is the PSD (in pixels)?

What resolution (PPI) does Illustrator say it is in the links panel?

Are you viewing it at the same zoom level in Illustrator and Photoshop?

Hi Doug,

Thank you so much for your help.

I've tried two versions:

For the placed PSD file info is:

• the PSD file is 5500 x5500 pixels.
• the PPI resolution is 488
• I am viewing it at the same zoom level in PSD as well as Ai. But in
photoshop the picture is crystal clear but pixelated in Ai.

For the placed PDF file info is:

• the PSD file is 5500 x5500 pixels.
• the PPI resolution is 488
• I am viewing it at the same zoom level in PSD as well as Ai. And with the
PDF version the photoshop the picture is crystal clear and the Ai is good
but not as clear as the PSD.

Please let me know any advice you have as this would be incredibly helpful
🙂 thanks for your time.

At which zoom level are you zoomed in?

Did you scale the image in Illustrator?

Please show screenshots of the pixelization.

Do you check the image quality in AI or Acrobat?
AI shows the rasters with a decreased resolution to minimize the system charging. Is the size of your PSD the same in AI as in Photoshop? Is the image resolution 300PPI?

Hi Anna,

Thank you so much for your help.

I'm checking the quality in Ai which is specified below:

In Acrobat the size is: 139MB and the page size is 9.17in x 9.17in.

Ah ok, so it may print better even though it shows it to be pixelated? Why
doesn't the placed PDF show up as pixelated as the placed PDF? The size is
488 PPI and the size of the image is 5500 x 5500 pixels.

Please let me know any advice you have as this would be incredibly helpful
🙂 thanks for your time.

Yes, it will be printed better than it looks in AI. The appearance of different kinds of imported files may differ depending on their origin (PDF and PSD do not look the same). It doesn't matter.

If you want to print your artwork in the general printing house, I would suggest to change the image size in PSD so that the final resolution (the one that you can see in the Links panel in AI) become 300PPI. It provides the best printing quality.
