When I go to place a .ai file that I had just made into a new file all of the type that I had used in that file has it's typeface change to a different one however when I just open the file the typeface is still what I had used. Has any one ever had this problem before or something similar?

I assume this is all happening on the same computer?

Does your font have any licencing restrictions? (Straws & grabbing).

If you type a line of text in your 2nd file, can you see and use the font?

How did you confirm no licensing issues? It sounds as if the PDF portion of the file is not embedding the font. It will look OK when you open it because the font is on your system. If it was working before, replace the font with a fresh copy.

Test 1:

Make a PDF from Illustrator using the font.

Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro and see if the font is listed as embedded/subset.

Test 2 if Test 1 shows the font is embedded.

Make a copy of the font is you don't already have one.

Uninstall the font.

Open the PDF in Acrobat and see what happens

If you are sure you can legally do it, and are on a tight deadline, outline the font. Not the best option, but desperate times calls for desperate measures...

When you place a file, Illustrator uses the PDF part of the file.

You should better link that file, not embed it.

If you want the file editable it might be safer to open it and then copy and paste.
