Hello,

I am placing PNG files on my artboard in Illustrator, and the clip art has a white background.  If I open the same clip art in Photoshop, the background is transparent.  Is there a setting to change so that the clipart can be imported with a transpartent background in Illustrator?

Dandelion,

Are you sure it is there?

You can place it in front of another object, or in the View dropdown set the Transparency Grid or the (subtler) Grid to show, the former as in PS.

The whiteness of the Artboard in AI represent the nothingness, like the empty white paper you print on.

Can you check in Photoshop if the png Image > Mode is RGB  and not Indexed color?

If it is Indexed change to RGB and resave.
