Aug 18, 2024 Aug 18, 2024

Used to be able to double click an object to create artboard that fits it

But I can't do this in the last version of illustrator

double clicking with the artboard tool does nothing

How do I enable it or fix it?

Still works for me on AI 28.6 on macOS 14.5. What version of Illustrator and operating system are you using?

Maybe try to restart Illustrator with resetting the preferences. Check this thread: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/how-to-reset-illustrator-preferences/m-p/1060...

If you have some user defined settings already make sure to make a copy of those.

I did the resetting and restarted (with a backup) but it still didn't solve the issue.

I can drag select but not double click to auto create the artboard. I'm not sure what's the issue.

edit : I managed to do it once.
I kept spaming clicks untill it made one artboard. but couldn't do it again.
The issue is, as soon as I click once, it goes instantly into the drag mood.
I tried different mouse/port but that doesn't fix it

What kind of object is it?

Which device do you use? A mouse? A tablet?

Exactly where do you click?

Is it just one file? Or all files?

What kind of object is it?

- vector shapes / images / etc

Which device do you use? A mouse? A tablet?

- I use one mouse, but I also tried different mouse and graphic tablet as well

Exactly where do you click?

- Usually at the highligted border, but I tried in the center and every possible inch

Is it just one file? Or all files?

- I was just gonna say all files, as it happened accross all my current project files, but I tried to open new project from the premade print preset and all of them didn't have this issue. However, when I tried the same from the web tab, but the issue still exists.

I tried it with the Web documents but had no issues with them. Do you have any additional mouse driver installed? Is you mouse speed set up very high? Double click speed? In order to create the artboard, you only need to click once. So maybe you can experiment with the mouse click speed in the system?

Didn't install additional mouse drivers. only the default ones. And yeah it works with one click in the premade print preset. Which means that it's not the speed I think. Which also is mideum speed and changing it doesn't change the outcome. As for click speed, I have no idea how to access that. But I tried another mouse and graphic tablet and the issue is the same.

update :

I'm not sure what is going on but appearently anytime a smart guide is active while hovering, it didn't enable me to create the artboard. (in both print and web).

I turned off smart guides and here is the current situation :

- New Print File :  works fine 100% of the time

- New web file : still doesnt work at all

- Main project file (web) : still doesnt work at all
- Older projects (web) : works fine 100% of the time

I'm so confused right now

Can you copy some of the objects from your project file into a new file and then try again?

I did that but all new (web) files are not working with any object. The ones I newly created or copied.

The new print files are working with new and copied objects.

I have no idea why the smart guide is interfering with this function. And why it differs from print/web. And why some older (web) files work fine (only when smart guides are off)

Can you turn off the Wacom support in the Illustrator preferences?

Or maybe even uninstall the driver?

Then you probably need someone to look into it.

@Anubhav M can you please check this out?

Hello @Tarek Elsayed,

We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. Would you mind trying to run Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps? Also, try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Just some feedback from the macOS side. All scenarios you describe work on my machine (smart guides on and off). Sorry that it is so cumbersome at your end.

Turning off "View > Smart Guides" and clicking the object with artboard tool created an artboard for me also.

Yeah, 5 months later and I still get the same issue.

Although it's a new PC with different specs, new operating system, new adobe account and subscription, and new illustrator version. So it's definitely adobe-side bug.

And also yeah, turning off smart guides "fixes" it for some reason.

Also, when smart guides are on, but no smart guide is active/detected, it works fine for me.
