"License stopped working " when launching Ai CS4 in High Sierra

I'm running 2 oldish macs - a mid 2011 27" iMac and a mid 2014 13" macBook pro and I have just upgraded from El Capitan to High Sierra on both to solve a minor unrelated issue.

 

I have used Illustrator CS4 for a long time on both machines and CS4 is still working fine on the macbook after the update. But I can’t launch it on the iMac as I get an alert saying “Licensing for this product has stopped working” and quotes ‘Error: 5’.

 

Any advice gratefully received!
