Recommended RAM for Handling High-Detail Illustrator Files on Apple silicon

Explorer ,
Sep 30, 2024 Sep 30, 2024

We are planning get a new M-type Apple machine for one of my colleagues. Top of the notch.
It will be used for making escape plans in illustrator. We will recieve very high detailed drawings probably produced in autocad. They are usualy one layered documents with a huge amount of lines and hatches.

Typically drawing of oil rig installations. Quite complex.

We need to remake them after a certain standard and make them readable and printabel before installation

There will be no use of 3D effects or other resource demanding functions.

What will be the appropriate RAM level with a brand new apple machine.
I would guess somewhere between 32-64GB RAM. Would it be any point in getting more then this?
Is it a limitation to how much RAM illustrator can accsess?

Thanks for any feedback!

Hi @TKAMDAL,

Thanks for reaching out. It sounds like you’re working on some pretty complex projects, so I totally understand your desire to get the right specs for your new Apple machine. For high-detail drawings like the ones you mentioned, where you’ll be working with a lot of lines and hatches, having enough RAM is essential for smooth performance.

For Illustrator, 32 GB to 64 GB of RAM would be a great range for handling large and detailed documents without issues. The more RAM you have, the better your system will handle heavy files, especially when you’re working with complex designs like oil rig installations.

As for whether there’s a limitation on how much RAM Illustrator can access, it’s important to note that Illustrator can take advantage of 64 GB of RAM efficiently. Going above 64 GB might not significantly improve Illustrator’s performance unless you’re dealing with extremely heavy, multi-layered projects or running many other demanding applications at once.

In your case, I’d say 64 GB would be the sweet spot for future-proofing, but 32 GB would also do a solid job for typical workflows.

Hope this helps with your decision-making! Let me know if you need more insights! 😊

Best,

Anshul Saini
