Relinking image inside clipping mask turns object into Clip group

I need to make an ai-file with artboards where contents are placed and cropped in a same way on each artboard, only the image changing. I have my material as a pdf-file with several pages. Every time I relink my clipping mask content to the next pdf-page needed, Illustrator turns the linked file into a Clip group (as seen on the screenshot attached). This has never happened before and is starting to be very frustrating as I don't want to arrange and mask everything manually.

Solved: there's a dialogue box while relinking that I hadn't noticed.
