If you are finished with your design, you can choose Object > Path > Outline Stroke.

Ungroup the result. bring the white rectangle to the front.

Select both the white shape and the outlined path and click Minus Front in the Pathfinder panel.

This is destructive, you cannot easily change your original path so it is best done at the end or with a copy.

You may also try to decrease the Miter Limit in the Stroke palette. Or choose a different corner option there.

I thought about the miter limit, but you cannot control the angle of the mitre.

Lisa,

If you can live with such a solution, based on your screenshot you can:

1) Click the white rectangle behind the offending mitre spike to select it, then hold Ctrl/Cmd and press X then F then X then F to bring it on top;

2) ShiftClick the path with the offending mitre spike to also select that;

3) In the Transparency palette use Make (Opacity) Mask with Clip unticked and Invert Mask ticked.

This ought to hide the offending mitre spike behind the now invisible white rectangle.
