Right to Left Text (Arabic)?

Hi everybody, I am trying to work with RTL text in Illustrator but I can’t change the paragraph direction so the punctuation appears at the wrong side of the text. This page, link below, says you can select the paragraph direction from the Paragraph panel. However, that option is not in my paragraph panel! Does anybody know why I don’t have those buttons in my panel? Thanks for your help.

I don't know for sure, but the difference seems to be that there are East Asian and Indic options.

If you don't use those languages, then the English Arabic/Hebrew version alone should be fine.

Do you have an Arabic version installed?

An Arabic version of what? Do you need an Arabic version of Illustartor with different panels?

The Arabic version has the full support.

You can try if you can get around when you turn on "Show Indic options" in Preferences > Type. If it doesn't work, you need the Arabic version.

I’ve tried Hebrew and you have exactly the same problem. Why do you have that paragraph direction option in the Arabic version and not the standard version? Anyway, that’s a shame. Thanks.

That is probably because most people don't need it.

To install the Arabic/Hebrew version of Illustrator, see this thread.

Thanks Silk, I’ll check that out! Do you know if you can do everything in the English Arabic/Hebrew version that you can do in the default version that I’ve already got installed or would I have to have two versions installed? If so that would be a bit annoying but not the end of the world!

Thanks, I’ll consider this option if necessary. I think for the amount of Arabic and Hebrew text I will be working with, it will be easier to just put the punctuation in a separate text box and place it in the right place myself.

I don’t see why in Adobe apps you can’t put on RTL punctuation wherever you want anyway! In other apps you can put punctuation wherever you want on RTL text! However, you can’t even do that on this forum! I guess this is just Adobe being bonkers!

Just install an Arabic version.

Fair enough. I've just realised that Firefox browser moves Arabic punctuation about on my website, so it's not just Adobe! My bad!
