Rough Edges and Lines

I'm currently learning to use illustrator for a school project, that being said, I can't find out how to smooth out rough lines or edges in a convinient way. Any help? I attached some photos below.

Smooth tool will probably not solve this.

It looks like those lines are not connected. The Join tool in the toolbar (in a group with the Shaper tool) could do it.
