scaling objects that are not uniform

I managed to get the outside upside down T done with the pen tool, however, cannot figure out how to scale this outside T. Copied/pasted the outside T then tried to scale it to fit inside, but could not get it uniform. Never mind about all of the gradients/fancy stuff. I just need to figure out how to scale "irregular" objects uniformly.

Try to use menu: Object --> Path --> Offset Path. You will then get a real path.

 

Or use menu: Effects --> Path --> Offset Path with a new Stroke in the Appearance Panel. This is a live effect. Finally, if you need a real path, you need to extend the Appearance.
