Hello,
I have been away from Illustrator for a few months and am using a file I was previously using Shape Builder on. It is really strange: I select my shapes (all simple straight lines and shared edges), and when I select shape builder the cursor is not the arrow with the merge symbol, instead it is cross-hairs. Hovering does not higlight red edges or higlight shapes. Clicking and dragging across common edges does not merge the shapes.
Any ideas? Thanks ahead of time.
Hi, Larry. As far as I can see, caps lock only toggles precise cursors but has no effect on Shape Builder behavior. I suspect this may require a preferences reset, though something less drastic would be more palatable.

Is the caps lock on?

Well, I was desperate, so resetting my preferences worked. Thank you. I have no clue what I changed along the way.

What do the shapes look like?
You mentioned simple straight lines. Shape builder works with closed shapes and lines that appear to be closed shapes.
For example, shape builder won't do anything with these two circles and a line.
But it will work with these two circles and two lines because even though the lines are not closed shapes, they appear to be making a closed chape.

I had been using shape builder fine earlier, so the issue was not the shapes.
I reset my preferences which fixed it.
Thank you for your efforts, though.
