Is there a possibility that there is a gap between the objects? What happens if you turn gap detection on in the tool settings?

I second the suggestion shared by Doug. It might be possible that there is a gap between the objects. If that is not the case, please share a few more details, such as:

• OS and version of Illustrator
• Is the issue specific to this particular file? What happens if you try the same thing on a new file with different objects?
