Shape builder tool. Ungrouping

I used the shape builder tool and got rid of a portion of the text along with the rectangle that was on top of it

I am now trying to color these two pieces separately, but I don't know how. I tried to ungroup, expecting the pieces to separate, but they are still recognized as a single whole.

Figured it out. I made the text into a compound path then used the pathfinder tool to subtract the rectangle. Ungrouping works in this case. I think it might have been the compound path that did the trick.
