Snapping to paths inside a compound shape

I'm struggling to get my points to snap to a shaped path inside a compound shape.

See the curved line in pink, this shape. Wether I'm working inside the compound shape or not, my point will not snap accurately to this.

If I copy this shape and paste it as a normal shape(not in a compound path) then things will snap to it, but it seems a hassle to copy the shape each time just to work with it.

I don't think I understand what should snap where?

Do you use smart guides?

Exactly how do you grab the shape?

Are you working in isolation mode?
