`/~ Tilde key not working

Explorer ,
Aug 10, 2023 Aug 10, 2023

Hi there,

Im using Windows pro 10 for work stations and have Illustrator 27.8.1 installed.

My `-key, that I use to move pattern fills inside paths, is not working anymore.

`+R, `+S, `+hollow arrow, all are not working anymore.

I have reset my preferences, restarted my computer, unplugged my keyboard.
My PC is set up in English and so is my key board and Illustrator.

Does anyone know what to do?

Kind regards,

W

FIX:

After being on the search on how to fix my problem, I looked at other people having trouble with different keys not working.
My fix was: edit>preferences>change key increment (changed it from 1.000001pt to 1pt)>restart Illustrator>problem was magically solved

Dear Anubhav,

I have solved the problem now, luckily. I have changed the increment to 1pt again. Plus: I had to change my input language as English US for all installed languages. Apperently, Adobe takes your standard language as your input-language even when you change it. (I changed my keyboard language to English US but that didnt work, I have to change my standard input language to English US).

W,

Are you using US English (keyboard), and is there any change in that?

Just for one thing, the Tilde key is not working on a UK keyboard.

Hi Jacob,

The input I'm using is both NL (US international keyboard) and ENG (UK keyboard)
It doesnt work on either. On my colleagues software, who use NL keboard input, the keybind do still work.

Thanks for thinking along!

Hello @Wouter28651033dqiu,

We understand how frustrating it can be to not be able to use shortcuts in Illustrator. Would you mind trying to reassign the key for Pattern Tile under the Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts Menu and checking if it helps?

Also, try to run Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Safe Mode hasnt changed anything for me..

Thanks for thinking along!

I found the Pattern tile command, but it had nothing bound to it. In Illustrator Default keybinds there is no command bound to this. When binding a key to it, nothing seems to change..

A couple of apps interfere with modifier keys. Can you check if you have some of these installed and try and reboot the system and turn them off:

  • WebRoot
  • Apple Terminal
  • Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • »Enable Full Keyboard« in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard on Mac OS
  • Apple Mail, Outlook
  • Spacebar is used as a shortcut by the system
  • Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari
  • Wacom Desktop Center, Wacom settings
  • Windows Touch Pad problem
  • LastPass, Bitwarden (password managers)
  • The VPN

BTW: the list is probably not complete.

An impressive list, Monika, with a modest introduction.

Instead of having to research the monster threads every time, I just thought that I'd collect them and write that down once and then just post it.

Thanks Monika,

I have tried rebooting with all other apps closed, which didnt seem to work.
I believe it has to do with the recent A-update. But resetting my preferences did not fix it yet.

Now that was a subtle change, W, from something rather strange.

What say you, Anubhav? @Anubhav M

Too bad, after updating to Windows11, this problem has returned. The previous solution does not work anymore.

Hello @Wouter28651033dqiu,

I am sorry to hear about your experience. As I understand, the "`" + "R"/"S" shortcuts are not working correctly in Illustrator. If that is right, could you try running Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav
