Times New Roman - Regular Does Not Exist?

Software Info:

Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

Adobe CC, all apps utd

Hi! I'm having a weird one. When I am using the type tool in Illustrator and go to choose my font, Times New Roman Regular does not exist in the list. I have Bold, Bold Italic, and Italic. The font is installed on my computer and working properly in other programs aside from Photoshop. Photoshop is replacing TNR-R with Radioactive Roman.

If I take an old file that had TNR-R and open it in Illustrator, TNR-R is automatically replaced with Radioactive Roman. If I open it in Photoshop, it looks OK but says it is Radioactive. 

According to Windows, I cannot uninstall and reinstall Times or Radioactive to see if that would fix the issue. Times is a protected font, and Radioactive doesn't even have a path to find the file.

Any ideas?

I can imagine how frustrating this must be, especially when working with something as common as Times New Roman. It’s strange that it’s showing up as Radioactive Roman, and I appreciate all the troubleshooting you’ve already done.

Clearing the cache and uninstalling all but the 103 fonts Windows refused to delete did make Times New Roman - Regular available in Illustrator.

However, Photoshop is still replacing it with Radioactive. Odder still, Radioactive is not listed in my control panel and gives no file location in settings (screencaps attached).

What happens if you uninstall the Radioactive font? Some of the fonts available at free fonts web sites like DaFont are not properly authored. There is a very wide range of quality in free/open source fonts. Some of them are expertly created and others are, well, not so much. Badly authored fonts can cause problems with other fonts installed in the computer system. I've seen technical problems occur with fonts downloaded from the Google Fonts web site, and they're usually pretty good at vetting the fonts they carry there.

I can't uninstall it, which is part of the problem. If you check the attachments in my response to Anshul, you'll see I don't have a file path and can't find it. Any ideas where else it could be?

I understand how frustrating this issue must be. Since this problem now only occurs in Photoshop and involves a non-Adobe font, I recommend posting this issue in the Photoshop community for further help. Additionally, it is a good idea to contact Microsoft support, as the problem is tied to a conflicting system font rather than an Adobe-specific one. Hopefully, they can assist with locating and removing the “Radioactive Roman” font. Let us know how it goes!

The Radioactive Roman font is badly created (the risks of cheap/free fonts) and "Greg" didn't bother to change the internal Unique name from Times New Roman Regular nor its associated Postscript name, so it's conflicting with your REAL Times New Roman. You have no choice but to get rid of it and purge your font caches to clear it from your system.

Someone with a font editing program could alter the entries so it doesn't conflict, but if it's a font you really don't need, just get rid of it.

Is the font visible in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder? If so, try removing it there. Try closing all programs and deleting the font data cache file located at C:\Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT and then re-starting the computer.

Have you tried search for it in File Explorer?

The file name would simply be "radio.ttf"

Also, it depends on how you chose to install that font at the time as to where it's location is.

When you simply "Install" it will load into a Fonts folder in the current User's directory, e.g. "C:\USERS\XXXXXX\APPDATA\LOCAL\MICROSOFT\WINDOES\FONTS"

whereas "Install for All Users" puts it in the main "C:\WINDOWS\FONTS" folder

You didn't upload it to Creative Cloud fonts by any chance, in which case you need to delete it from there, too.

It should have shown you the path regardless of the location, so the fact it doesn't lends me to believe that you might very well have deleted the file but it's still being pulled from a persietnt font cache.

I didn't find the font file, so it was definitely pulling from old data somewhere. I cleared the font cache in both locations this time (thanks for the sys32 tip, Bobby! Apparently that was separate from the ServiceProfiles AppData). I also went into CC and removed my uploaded fonts even though I didn't specifically see Radioactive. After that, it was gone.

I've turned fontcache back on and restarted my computer to be safe. Everything is working smoothly.
