Trim view does not work

I have seen other posts about this but no answer that works for me. I suspect I'm doing something obviously wrong. Trim view does not trim the material outside the artboard. I am viewing in preview mode.

That looks like a document created with a Film & Video preset, in which case there are two artboards: a screen-sized one in the centre of the work area, and a second one that encompasses almost all of the work area.

Delete the second one; it's only relevant if you use it for exporting to After Effects.

Is it an bmp (jpg, png.. etc) image file imported in Ai?
