Type on Path - does not allow moving the text around the path

Hello, I used to be able to use the "type on path" tool to type around a circle and then move that text around using the handles but there are no longer any handles. Why cant I see the handles even if Im using the direct selection tool? Is there some feature that changed?

You need to use the selection tool (black arrow)
