I use the unite button within pathfinder to merge the two sections of a truck outline weekly in my line of work; This is the first time I have had this issue with getting two sections to merge while I have them overlapping and have done my best to troubleshoot and search this community for fixes. I understand this issue may be common but my example is niche; Tried to make compound paths, expand, look for overlapping paths but am unable to get them to merge. Attaching screenshots and a lone file with the two elments I am meant to combine. Any suggestions?
Had to attach file as PDF with error I was getting trying to post

I cannot reproduce that in your file.
Can you check the shapebuilder tool options (double click the tool): is gap detection turned on?
As for the Pathfinder: you might want to check the settings as well (in the panel menu)

Hmmm curious.... I wen into the shape builder settings and turned on gap detection but had no success. I also tried to tweak the precision in the pathfinder options to .01 but the issue persists.
This is starting to make me think that there might be an issue with the application or my version of it as this has not been an issue until I updated. I even went back to files from last week that I know I could merge and still get the error. When using the shape builder tool I get error code PARM but it has also crashed the application several times. Thank you for your quick reply and I apologize for any confusion my explanation may be causing

This is about as simple as it gets and I'm having issues even. Might need to roll back?

Before you roll back, I would try and reboot the computer and if still necessary reset the Illustrator preferences.
