Unwanted stroke around text

Anyone know how to fix Illustrator from applying a black outline around text when I try and change type color?

I don't have any stroke applied (see screengrab).

It's suddenly started happening with all fonts. I've tried quitting and restarting, but no difference.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Check out the Appearance panel. The stroke could be applied to the layer. Or group. Or text object

Thanks Monika. You were right - it was set on a layer.

You're seeing the fill applied to the type originally which is always black. You need to clear the fill of the type by accessing the color applied at the character level. Select the type and look in the Appearance panel. Double click on the Character line and delete the fill shown there. Either apply the new color there or use the add a new fill button and apply the new color.
