What does the lower case 'a' next to the font name in the font list stand for/mean?

The O icon means opentype. I believe the lowercase "a" is the old type-1 font format, as have not seen in a long time. Photoshop does not even allow that anymore as that font technology is old and problematic. Opentype is better to use as has more characters, better kerning, etc.

The a is the symbol for Type1 PostScript fonts.
