When I save an illustrator file it actually saves as a quark file. How I can I keep it in illustrator?
Thanks for reaching out. As Mylenium pointed out, Illustrator doesn't save in quark format. However, it is possible the icon of the Ai file is changed to another app's icon due to some OS setting modified by that app. This can be fixed by app reinstall or wait for the next Illustrator update, or you can try the suggestion in this third-party help article (https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-customize-your-default-apps-in-windows-and-macos).

File associations have nothing to do with the programs. You need to fix it at the system level. AI cannot even save a Quark file. It's the other way around. Quark is usurping your Adobe file associations. Why and how we can't know without more specific info, but guides on how to fix this stuff are easy to find in a web search.

I've experienced similar situations with a couple of graphics applications not made by Adobe (cough: Affinity Designer). The applications will change file associations when installed. It's easy enough to change. On a Windows-based PC a user can open File Explorer, choose a folder containing AI, PDF and EPS files whose associations have been changed. Right click on the file and choose "open with" from the fly-out menu. The process is similar using the Finder on Mac OSX. If you have files saved on the desktop you can quickly change file associations just by clicking on them.
