Why do I need to disable the control top bar to export as > every time, if I need to export my work I have to select all artboard with the selection tool

Do you reboot regularly?

ALso: is it just the preview that is missing or does it also not get exported?

Looks like this problem:

I have the same problem, but never tried to disable the control bar. 

That seems to activate the preview when something is selected.

As a workaround use Export for screens.
