Will not save eps files

I usually create a number of illustrations for a single project on individual artboards in illustrator and then save them separately as eps files. When I try to do that lately, I get an error message that says  "could not save the illustration. Cannot complete the requested operation". This happens when I try to save them all at once (the whole range of artboards in a document), or one at a time. I've tried all the usual shutdowns, re-installs, etc. 

anybody know why eps won't save?

Exactly where are you trying to save?

What's in the file?

Do other formats work?
