Today, I have noticed a possible frustrating issue with the art board size in illustrator when a file needs to be converted from .ai to .dxf.  Below is how to get the correct art board size every time when you import the .dxf file back into illustrator to review before sending the file out.

If you want the same art board size everytime and to keep all the original proportions of the art then choose file new right before converting.  Make sure the last new file is set to the same art board size of your current project.  It will not be the same if you create other art board sizes inbetween and you will need to make a fake new file again before exporting the .ai file to .dxf.  There is no need to save the new file.  It is just to get the correct art board size when converting the file.
