Connecting paths

Hello!  I'm trying to make a map on Illustrator on iPad.  I drew it all out and realized that a few of the paths didn't connect properly (meaning, I couldn't fill in the land masses properly).  Any idea how to connect or erase and reconnect the paths?  I'd like to be able to erase the section that's faulty and reconnect it with a new path, using the pencil.  But I can't seem to get that to work.  Thanks!

If you mean you want to close a single open path, then one way is to select all points (drag over the path with the direct selection tool) then click the close path icon on the on-artboard menu that appears below your selection (fourth symbol from left).

This is different than connecting the end points of two separate open paths. In that case you select the two endpoints and ONLY the two endpoints (again with the direct selection tool), then click that same close path icon as above.
